Thompson was elected as a Republican to the [[United States Senate]] in the November 8, 1994, special election to fill the unexpired term (Ending January 3, 1997) of [[Al Gore|Albert Gore, Jr.]] vacant by resignation upon Gore's election as [[Vice President]].  Thompson was re-elected in 1996 for a full 6 year term,  ending January 3, 2003. He decided not to be a candidate for reelection in 2002,  resuming his acting career.
