The American Historical Association is the largest organization for the history profession. Founded in 1884, they include 14,000 individuals of people who are in college and university faculties, public historians, independent scholars, archivists, librarians, and secondary school teachers. Since 1889 the group has been incorporated in the District of Columbia by an act of Congress. In 1898 the Association began to subsidize the American Historical Review, which is still in publication today. The association has been active in working with the government to publish documentary records and preserve historical records. They are also influential in schools teaching history as a curriculum.
The organization officially accepted women and minorities from the beginning; however no African Americans were represented on the AHA governing Council until 1959, and only 15 women served on the AHA Council before 1971 (out of over 186 members), and they had little to no representation.
