Nylon is a synthetic polymers first produced in 1935 at DuPont. Nylon was first used in 1938 for the bristles on toothbrushes. In 1940, it provided fabric for women's stockings (called [[nylons]]). It substituted for silk.
It was used by the United States for [[parachute]]s in World War II in 1941, making nylon stockings hard to find until the war's end.
Nylon fibers are now used in carpets, guitar strings, racket strings, fishing lines and pantyhose.
