But Adam did eat the fruit of the tree and was cast out of paradise.  

Eve was informed by a talking serpent, assumed to be Satan, that if she ate from the tree that she and Adam would not die. Adam and Eve did eat the fruit of the tree and did not die, thereby acclaiming God as the first liar. They were later cast out of the garden of Eden. The Bible does not really say what sort of tree it was, but it is historically portrayed as a citric fruit-bearing tree.
