The '''Mujahideen''' were Afghan tribesmen in the 1980s who opposed the Soviet takeover of Afghanistan in 1979. They were Muslims who were supported by the United States; they defeated the Soviets in the [[Soviet-Afghan War]]. They were in no way connected with the [[Taliban]], who came later.
