I cannot understand the American's morbid fear of socialism. I am Canadian, and here there are the bare traces of socialism that make sence; Health Care for example. The thing I dont understand is why Americans dont want this. They dont want to change. Every succesfull nation in history got where they were by evolving and changing, whether it be with a radical new idea or by taking the best out of a previous nation that had died. Think of Egypt, and the ancient Middle East. Civilization had its earliest roots here, and it was primitive, but it worked. After thousands of years the oldest nations died and newer ones came up; the Second Kingdom of Egypt, Assyria, Israel, Babylon, and changed how everything worked, especially Babylon. And as time passed, they fell, and rose the nation of Achaemenid Persia, who were much less opressive than previous states and who had an advanced system of laws. Then, eventually, the Greeks arose, bringing ideals of learning and naionalism; loyalty and discapline. They turned back the dieing nation of Persia twice and eventually grew so advanced that they conquered them. But they took government far more seriously than previous states and fell apart. From the ashes arose Rome, who copied much of the Greek culture, but improved upon it, making their nation the very first democratic Republic. They had an extremely advanced and detailed system of laws that was used for 2000 years. But corruption tore them apart, made them into an empire, and caused it to collapse. And from its ashes, after a 1000 year long dark age known as the middle ages, the nations in the renaiscanse copied the best of thier culture and ideas, and improved on them. This process has happened throuoght all of history, the United States rose from this very fashion, taking what works of previous nations (several other democratic states) and improving them. What does this have to do with Obama? Everything. 150 years ago Karl Marx had a revolutionary idea, one that seemed perfect on paper. But as it was tried out, it had many downsides. Communism failed to offer any incentive for people to work hard, and productivity dropped. This along with a series of very poor rulers who were barely communist at all (Stalin, Mao, Etc.) went to further cement it as a failure in practicality. Most nations collapsed or underwent reforms in the 80s, and communism had taken its place with the many other dead governments and ideas in history. And after it ended, it was forgotten by the US, in the sence that they failed to do what historic nations have always done; to take the best of the culture and government, fix it, and adopt it. Parts of Socialism are very effective and helpfull, and while some nations took out these elements, the US labled it all Communist (as in the USSR) and feared and hated it. What I see in Obama is the first step to adapt, to make the changes necessary to stay one of those described succesefull nations. But this site furthers my confusement about the US's continued fear of socialism. Why? Why is it hated? Why hate Obama? Why hate Muslims? I don't understand. Maybe someone here, the seemingly typical American closeminded view can help me understand. Or perhaps I will be ignored, just as you ignore the history that created you.
