The NAACP was not involved in the famous [[Brown v. Board of Education]] case in 1954 in which the Supreme Court declared segregated schools were illegal. That litigation was handled by an entirely separate organization with a similar name, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.
In recent decades it has been torn by internal strife and plays a minor role in national affairs.
