added paragraph about relativity, Newtonian gravity
Line 2: Line 2:
Electromagnetics is an example of a field theory.  [[Quantum mechanics]], as originally developed, was not a field theory.  Physicists attempted to develop a field theory explanation for quantum mechanics, known as [[quantum field theory]].

The [[Theory of General Relativity]] is a field theory because it assumes (or predicts) the existence of never-discovered [[gravitons]] to transmit the equivalent of a gravity force as a function of position.  Newtonian gravity could be viewed as field theory because its force varies based on position, but Newtonian gravity does not assume the existence of any actual physical transmission of the force.
