During the debut show of the 2009 season on April 11, the performance of singer Susan Boyle became a sensation around the world, including the clip of her performance widely viewed over [[YouTube]] and shown on evening TV newscasts. Boyle's vocal talent caught the judges and audience off guard, who were initially skeptical because of her plain appearance and dress. Initially met with snickers when she appeared on stage, the audience gave her a standing ovation soon after she began performing her rendition of "I Dream a Dream" from ''[[Les Miserables]]''. Her backstory contributed some to her fame, as a 47 year old woman from [[Scotland]] whose mother had recently passed away, and who had, in her words, wanted to be a professional singer but had never been given a chance. Susan Boyle is a devout [[Roman Catholic]] and a church volunteer. She also received a standing ovation the next morning when she appeared in church on [[Easter]] Sunday.
The 2009 season winner was a dance group called Diversity, who barely beat Susan Boyle in the final round.
