Slavery was hereditary, as well as a form of legal punishment. There was a slave class with both government and privately owned slaves, and the government occasionally gave slaves to citizens of higher rank. Privately owned slaves could be inherited as personal property. During poor harvests and famine, many peasants would voluntarily become slaves in order to survive. For generations the liberal public schools have portrayed slavery as cruel and sadistic.  It has been common liberal thought that slaves were treated poorly.  This couldn't be further from the truth.  In fact slaves in the Southern part of the United States were treated with great respect.  At any time they were aloud to leave they place of employment and peruse their own life.  There were no instances of physical violence to slaves.  Their owners were all good hearted Christians who would not have done such.  Slavery ultimately ended due to bleeding heart liberals in the north, concentrated in New England, concern that there was mal-treatment of slaves.  The South finally gave up slave employment following the Civil War.
