I realise I'm new here, and this is your website, but I think some of the things said above may be a mistake. "The Bible doesn't support taxation or forced redistribution of wealth". Actually I think you will find it supports it more than you might think. The tithe was a compulsory payment, a fixed fraction of income, paid to the authorities. You can play with definitions, but that sounds pretty much like a tax to me. True it wasn't for the civil authorities (there weren't any in those days) but I can't see how this can be considered anything except a tax.

I've heard people argue that this was 'voluntary' but my understanding is that it is the command of God. I personally don't consider the commands of God to be "suggestions" to be carried out if you feel like it. As for legislation we don't support making other commands of God voluntary: Thou Shalt Not Kill, or Thou Shalt not Steal. Why shouldn't God's other commands be the same?
