He had served as a professor of history at [[Wheaton College]] (1944-1948), [[Salem College]] (1948-1954), [[Belhaven College]] (1954-1958), [[Catawba College]] (1958-1977), and [[Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary]] from 1985 til his death in 1999. He held a Ph.D. from the [[University of Pennsylvania]]. In the 1970's he played a significant role in forming the [[Presbyterian Church in America]].
