It is the story of a street punk with a substance abuse problem who is arrested while attempting to rob a pharmacy to satisfy her drug habit. Following the failed robbery, Nikita is convicted of murdering a policeman and sentenced to life in prison. While serving her sentence, Nikita is sneaked out of prison by an unknown government agency by being drugged and having a death sentence simulated, even to her. When she awakens from being drugged, she is given the choice of becoming an assassin (presumably for the French government) or being killed herself. Nikita is broken of her rebellious spirit as she struggles with opiate withdrawal to receive extensive training in weapons handling, etiquette, computers, and language.
