It is my opinion (which maybe inaccurate) that Mary was not married when visited by the angel Gabriel "I've had not relations with man." If she was married, most likely she would have had relations. Joseph fearing she was pregnant by another, sought to distance himself from her until his dream imploring him to marry her for she carries the Savior. --[[User:Jpatt|Jpatt]] 12:56, 12 March 2010 (EST)

:I think that stands to reason, and is generally accepted to be true.  A married woman would not say that. [[User:DouglasA|DouglasA]] 14:57, 12 March 2010 (EST)

:In Judaism, marriage has two parts:  erusin, where the man and woman agree to marry, either through the man giving the woman a gift in front of witnesses, or the two of them signing a marriage contract, also in front of witnesses, and nissu'in, where there's an actual ceremony in front of family and friends, and afterwards, the marriage is consummated.

Nowadays, in Judaism, the two parts of the marriage happen at the same time, but back then, couples usually waited a year between erusin and nissu'in.  The couple was, in the eyes of the law, married, and it was illegal for the wife to have sexual relations with anyone else, but they would live apart from other, and she wouldn't be part of his household until the nissu'in.

According to the bible, that's where Mary and Joseph were when she found out she were pregnant.  If Joseph had said publicly, "Mary's pregnant and it's not my baby", then she would have been in big trouble.  If he, on the other hand, said, "Mary's pregnant and it's my baby", it would have been embarrassing and people would have gossiped about it, because it was considered inappropriate to consummate the marriage before the nissu'in, but there wasn't anything technically wrong with it.--[[User:Whizkid|Whizkid]] 16:57, 12 March 2010 (EST)
