In December of 2008 after [[Stephane Dion]] was ousted as leader Ignatieff served as leader on a interim basis. In 2009 he was successful in forcing the two other candidates for the May 2009 leadership convention to drop out. His lead him to become leader of the party by acclaimation. As leader he has twice tried to force unpopular and unwanted federal elections, and has continuously worked at trying to force non-confidence votes in the goverment.

Ignatieff a perceived anti-Ukrainian sentiment in Blood and Belonging, where Ignatieff discusses Russian stereotypes of Ukrainians
"Blood and Belonginga" a book by Ignatieff has also been criticised for it's anti-Ukrainian sentiment in which he openly discusses Russian stereotypes towards Ukrainians.
It is also believed that during the 2010 Winter Olympics he may have cheered for and supported Russia over Canada.
