The Star Chamber was the monarch's courtroom in England created by King Henry VIII, which could administer any punishment except death. There was no jury and over time it was increasingly abused by the English monarch to reach preordained, unfair results. Defendants were compelled to testify against themselves, and the privilege against self-incrimination developed as a reaction to this abuse.
