Gustav IV Adolf of Sweden (1778–1837 AD) was king of Sweden from 1792 until his abdication in 1809. He succeeded his father, the assassinated Gustav III.

He is not kindly remembered, due to his many misfortunes in war. First, he lost Swedish Pomerania to France during the Napoleonic Wars. Then came the final blow to his reign - Russia invaded Finland. Within a few months, the province which had been a part of Sweden for many centuries, had been lost.

Within soon, a coup took place in March 1809 - He was forced to abdicate, surrendering the throne to his uncle, Karl XIII. He spent the rest of his day in exile, finally dying alone in a remote inn in Switzerland, under the alias of Colonel Gustafsson. Many years later, his remains were returned to Sweden on the suggestion of Oscar II.
