The '''Cod Wars''' were confrontations between [[Iceland]] and the [[United Kingdom]] over North [[Atlantic]] fishing policy which took place in 1958. 1972-73 and 1975-76. They followed unilateral extensions of Icelandic fishing grounds by the Icelandic government which were not recognised by British [[trawlers]]. Icelandic gunboats would attempt to cut the lines of, or even arrest, British vessels; while British [[Royal Navy]] frigates were sent to the area to protect the fishing fleet from interference.<ref>http://www1.american.edu/ted/icefish.htm TED Case Studies - The Cod War</ref>
