'''Jahangir''' (1569-1627; reigned 1605-1627) was the fourth [[Mughal]] emperor, succeeding his father [[Akbar]] in 1605 (he had unsuccessfully attempted to topple his father five years previously), and presiding over a period of great cultural achievement, if politically unstable (he had one of his own sons blinded as a punishnment for rebellion). More religiously intolerant than his father, Jahangir persecuted [[Sikh]]s. Jahangir was an alcoholic, and this weakened his health and helped bring about his death at the age of 58. He was succeeded by his son [[Shah Jahan]].
