The '''Faroe Islands''' are an [[archipelago]] in the North [[Atlantic]] Ocean, lying approximately midway between northern [[Scotland]] and [[Iceland]]. They are a part of [[Denmark]], though with a high degree of local autonomy. The group consists of 18 islands (of which one is uninhabited) and numerous islets and rocks; the total land area is 1,399 sq km. The Faroes have a population of 49,000.
