:::: You need to distinguish between massless and massive objects. Energy is given by the relativistic formula: <math> E^2 = p^2 + m^2 </math> in units where <math> c = 1 </math>. For a photon: <math> E = pc </math>. A key point to take from the SR equations for energy is that you do get problems when you try to accelerate a massive object to <math> v = c </math>. Should also be mentioned that modern particle accelerators can accelerate particles to velocities <math> v \approx c </math>. See: [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_in_special_relativity | Mass in SR] , [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_relativity | SR] and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photon | Photon].
