We also need to be aware of the differences between American and European Conservatism at the time, European conservatism of the early 20th century was concerned not with, as US conservatism is the preservation of the American Constitution, bill of rights et al. But rather with the regaining or conservation of the situation and institutions of 19th century Europe, meaning Merchantilism, Colonialism, Militarism and Imperialism, this is ably demostrated by the United Kingdoms Constitutional Crisis http://www.historyandpolicy.org/papers/policy-paper-94.html in which the predominatly conservative House of Lords vetoed the Budget of the newly elected Liberal (UK meaning) goverment, these 'conservatives' wanted to maintain the power of the Monarch and the Nobility and the Union with Irealnd against the expressed wishes of the Electorate, they have nothing in common with American Conservatism, but the are a prime example of European conservatism, hence the left-right axis really braking down when talking about events of the even close past, and more importantly across culural divides as deep as those between early 20th Century Europe and the modern United states [[User:Machine13|Machine13]] 11:11, 21 August 2010 (EDT)
