After signing the Declaration did the colonies officially become states or was not until Independence and the Articles were singed? Before 13 colonies split, each state was a royal province e.g. the Province of Connecticut. During the war they were no longer called royal but did they have official naming such as Colony of Connecticut? --[[User:Jpatt|Jpatt]] 00:01, 20 October 2009 (EDT)

::good question. In May 1776 Congress asked most of the "colonies" to write new constitutions as "states." As late as July 1, 1776 they called themselves the "United Colonies" and on July 4 1776 they became the "United States of America" [[User:RJJensen|RJJensen]] 00:08, 20 October 2009 (EDT)
