Union Brig. Gen. [[William Vandever]] pursued Brig. Gen. [[John S. Marmaduke]] to Chalk Bluff, where the Confederates hoped to cross the St. Francis River. To ford the river, Marmaduke established a rearguard that received heavy punishment on May 1-2.
