Personally, I believe that music is definitely as "JeanJaques" claims. A very well put answer but I would have to expand upon it and say that although one should not possess musical snobbery, one should not simply accept all types of music: for example, extreme heavy metal - basically white noise to me - is simply sounds which have not required any musical talent or insight to compose in the first place; however, the whole "birds or whales" idea as failing to be music is completely off to my mind. Known as "musique concrete", this form of music can be extremely evoccative and so I would have to disagree on that front. That is simply my viewpoint but as I have said, musical snobbery, although it shouldn't be overused, should be implemented to guide a listener away from creatively void works.

On the subject of rap, I would have to say that much of it is poetry but it can be fantastic lyrics which are written - not all the time - but I do find artists such as Eminem to be real word-smiths. [[User: Bealecr]] 14:54, 30 April 2009

In school, I was always taught the definition "organized noise". My family always insisted that was wrong, and that it had to be "pleasing to the ear" to be considered music. As what pleases the ear is subjective, which may include "noise" like the alternative rock I listened to when I was a kid, I'd have to go with the first one. -[[User:Danq|danq]] 19:17, 9 January 2011 (EST)
