The '''Second Battle of the Marne''' was a battle in July 1918 during which the [[Allied Powers of World War I|Allied Powers]] started winning [[World War I]].  The battle was fought about seventy-miles northeast of [[Paris]]. The [[German]]s started the battle with another of their offensives, but the nine [[American]] divisions turned the tables and enabled the allies to win.  There were enormous casualties on both sides.  Former [[President]] [[Teddy Roosevelt]]'s son was killed in this battle.

The '''Second Battle of the Marne''' was fought in July of 1918.  It was the turning point of [[World War I]] for the [[Allied Powers of World War I|Allied Powers]].  The battle was fought near the Marne river about seventy-miles northeast of [[Paris]].

 

The battle began with the last of the [[German]] Spring offensives. The first two days saw the Germans make significant gains against the French Sixth Army during which the 3rd U.S. Infantry Division was only major unit that managed to hold it's ground.  Eventually American and British reinforcements arrived and managed to halt and successfully counter-attack the Germans.

 

Both sides suffered high causalities during the battle.  The Germans also lost half of their artillery pieces that where involved in the battle.  Former [[President]] [[Teddy Roosevelt]]'s son was killed in the battle.
