In 1998, evidence emerged that Daniel Ortega had systematically sexually abused his stepdaughter for a period of eleven years beginning in 1979. Ortega was not charged due to the central judiciary (which was controlled by members of Ortega's Sandinista party) stating that too much time had passed for him to be charged with any crime.

In 2010, Ortega invaded Costa Rica over a border dispute originating with an error on Google Maps depicting the Nicaraguan border as crossing into Costa Rica's territory. The move was widely seen as an attempt for the unpopular Ortega to raise support for his re-election in 2011.
