I'm not sure how this is a conservative parable. Even the most hardened conservative can agree that innovation is not an exclusively conservative realm; while it was foolish of Fosbury's competitors to mock him and his approach, it fail to see how his perseverance was "conservative". For example, Apple Computers, a liberal company, faced much criticism in its early days (and even now), but has continued to innovate in its field.
