While there have been many winners of different nationalities and ethnicity, there has been only one African American men's winner:  [[Arthur Ashe]], in a stunning victory over the heavily favored Jimmy Connors. In the women's competition, the African American sisters [[Venus Williams|Venus]] and [[Serena Williams]] dominated the tournament during the 2000s, winning nine titles between them, including four all-Williams finals, and four women's doubles titles as well.
