Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852) was a [[Ukrainian]] author who wrote in the [[Russian]] language.  He was born in the village of  Sorochyntsi, [[Ukraine]].  His works were heavily influenced by his Ukrainian heritage. His most famous works are ''[[Dead Souls]]'' (which criticized the [[Tsar]]), "[[The Overcoat]]", and his depiction of the [[Ukrainian Kozak|Ukrainian Kozaks]] in ''[[Taras Bulba]]''. He is recognized as one of the greatest [[Russia|Russian]] authors, even though he was not Russian.
