After the character of Harvey Dent, a character in the movie who did significant work weakening crime in Gotham City, goes mad and becomes a criminal and is ultimately killed, the character of Bruce Wayne (aka: Batman), takes the blame for Dent's crimes so that Gotham City has a scapegoat (Batman) and a visible symbol of justice (Harvey). This is not unlike [[Jesus]] sacrificing himself to absolve the sins of man.
