He sailed with [[Christopher Columbus]] on his first trip to the [[New World]] in 1492 as [[captain]] of the ''Pinta''. Martin Alonso was born in Palos de la Frontera to a wealthy family. His brothers, Vicente Yáñez Pinzón and Francisco Martín Pinzón, went on Columbus's first voyage as captain and master of the ''Nina'', respectively.
