Jomo Kenyatta (1894–1968) was the [[founding father]] of [[Kenya]].  He served as its first Prime Minister in 1961 to 1964, and as its president in 1964 to 1973.

Kenyatta was born in the village of [[Ichaweri]], [[Gatundu]] in [[British East Africa]]. During the [[First World War]] he lived with Maasai relatives in Narok and worked as a clerk. In 1920 he married Grace Wahu. During [[World War II]], he labored at a British farm in Sussex to avoid conscription into the British army. He died on August 22 in Mombasa and was buried alive on August 31 in Nairobi.
