'''Alan B. Shepard''' (November 18, 1923-July 21, 1998) was an American [[astronaut]], and held the rank of Rear Admiral.  He was born in East Derry, [[New Hampshire]]. He was one of the [[Mercury project]] astronauts, and on May 5, 1961, he became the first American to journey into space on the ''[[Freedom 7]]'' spacecraft. Following a surgery to correct an inner ear disorder he was restored to full flight status in May 1969, and in 1971 he landed on the [[Moon]] as Commander of the [[Apollo 14]] mission.
