The '''Ashcan School''' was an art movement which lasted from 1908 to 1913 in New York City. It earned its name from critics who deemed its art fitting for the "Ash can". The Ashcan School portrayed urban scenes in a realistic, stretch-like manner and is recognized as the first uniquely American art movement. While it is best known for its subject matter, it is also known for its loose, spontaneous style and its dark, subdued palette.
