I believe there is a fuzzy line between liberal and conservative thought.  I myself straddle that line.  Some of my ideals are quite conservative, but some of them are liberal as well, dependent on the issue at hand.  I designate myself as a centrist for this reason.  WesleySHello! 22:43, 26 March 2009 (EDT)

"If a line graph was drawn, would the placements of liberal, middle, and conservative change over time or are they more concrete? "

They would absolutely change over time.  On the one hand, there's a tendency for things to become more liberal over time.  People who have a collection of views that would be regarded as moderate nowadays, would be regarded as liberal in times past.

In addition, the collection of views that are regarded as liberal or conservative are somewhat arbitrary.  There are few if any unifying principles on either side.  They are historical quirks, exacerbated by our party-based primaries (in the U.S.).

I did a college term paper on "Bagehot:  A liberal-conservative".  The topic was chosen from a list of topics provided by the professor.    I mentioned in passing in the paper that the concepts of liberal and conservative were abitrary, but the professor didn't agree.  Incidentally, he was an extreme liberal.  At the time, I was a pro-life liberal.
