An abugida (from the first four letters in the Ethiopic script), also known as an alphasyllabary or syllabic alphabet, is a kind of alphabet characterized by letters for both consonants and vowels. Consonants in abugidas have an inherent vowel which can be changed to another vowel or can be muted by means of diacritics. Vowels are usually written as diacritics, but can also be written with separate letters if they are at the beginning of a sentence or on their own.

Abugidas are most commonly found in India, in the form of the various members of the Brahmic scripts, namely the Devanagari and various Dravidian scripts like Tamil. They are also found in Ethiopia and Southeast Asia.
