'''HMAS AE2''' was an E Class [[submarine]] of the [[Royal Australian Navy]].  It was originally built in the [[UK]] and travelled out to Australia in company with its sister ship '''HMAS AE1'''.  In 1915, captained by Lieutenant Commander Henry Hugh Gordon Dacre Stoker D.S.O., R.N., AE2 was the first submarine to successfully penetrate the [[Dardanelles]] and enter the [[Sea of Marmara]], where she was scuttled, during the ill fated allied campaign on the [[Gallipoli]] peninsula in [[Turkey]].

After six days in the Sea of Marmara she was sunk by the Turks and her crew captured.

On 25 April 1915, captained by Lieutenant Commander Henry Hugh Gordon Dacre Stoker D.S.O., R.N., AE2 was the first submarine to successfully penetrate the [[Dardanelles]] and enter the [[Sea of Marmara]] during the ill fated allied campaign on the [[Gallipoli]] peninsula in [[Turkey]]. Over the following days the submarine made a number of attacks in the Sea of Marmara until 30 April when the Turkish torpedo boat ''Sultanhisar'' punctured the submarine's pressure hull resulting in an order to scuttle the vessel.

 

The crew were captured and imprisoned.
