'''Paul McCartney''' (1942- ) was bassist for the [[Beatles]] and shared songwriting credit with [[John Lennon]] for most of their original songs. McCartney favored lighter, more pop-oriented songs than Lennon, and this became much more apparent after April 1970 when the Beatles broke up and both began to record solo. McCartney soon formed a new band, Wings, and recorded many staples of AM radio.
In 1980 McCartney was arrested for possession of marijuana in Japan and spent a week in jail. Had he been tried and convicted, he would have spent seven years in prison. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1997.
Paul was married for thirty years to Linda Eastman, who played keyboards in Wings but died in 1998. His second marriage to Heather Mills lasted for four years and ended acrimoniously. He continues to tour and perform, and is Britain's highest-earning musician today.
