The film was directed by [[Stanley Kubrick]], and starred the [[British]] [[actor]] Peter Sellers, who played three different roles: President Merkin Muffley, Group Captain Mandrake, and the tittle character Dr Strangelove. Sellers was originally hired to play the role of Commander Kong as well, but because of an injury sustained during filming was unable to perform that role, so Slim Pickens was hried to fill in. James Earl Jones' first role in a film was as the B-52 bombardier, Lieutenant Lothar Zogg.

The storyline is about a mentally ill Strategic Air Command General (Jack Ripper) who decides to launch an unauthorized attack on the Soviet Union, and the efforts of the Government to recall the bombers.

Unfortunately the radios on Major Kong's B-52 have been destroyed by Russian air defences and it does not receive the recall order. Dr Strangelove then explains that the Russians have a [[Fail Deadly]] doomsday device which will destroy the planet if a nuclear weapon explodes inside the USSR.
