The '''Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act''' prohibits abortion when a pregnancy past 20 weeks of a pregnancy (about 1.5 trimesters). It is based on the medical evidence that unborn children experience pain at that age.

This approach is promoted by [[National Right to Life]] and has passed in six states: Alabama, Georgia, Kansas, Idaho, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. It affects relatively few abortions. This approach is similar to the ban on [[partial-birth abortion]], which affected only a tiny percentage of abortions. Indeed, the abortion rate increased after the partial-birth abortion ban becamse effective.

Unlike this approach, there is very effective [[pro-life]] legislation that is proven to reduce abortion, such as the [[30-mile rule]], defunding [[Planned Parenthood]], establishing private causes of action for victims of abortion, and meaningful [[sonogram law]]s.
