The character '''Golliwog''' is the main character in verses written by Bertha Upton in the 1890s. The books were illustrated by her daughter Florence. Mother and daughter worked together on a total of twelve books recounting cheerful character's adventures travelling around the [[world]]. Golliwog was always accompanied by his friends, the Dutch Dolls.
Golliwog, (or Golly as he became) eventually became the mascot for Robertson's [[Jam]] who created dolls and enamelled badges to be given away for a [[promotion]] whereby people would send in a number of jam jar labels.
In recent times, Golly is not seen as [[politically correct]] and has waned in popularity.
