First, it is hard to reconcile anyone who is a Christian could also support the death penalty (the whole what would Jesus do thing).  Secondly, for a government to take the life of one of it's citizens, is the ultimate punishment...there is no reprieve.  If it is found that mistakes were made in the judicial process, you can't release someone you've executed, which is why a very wide latitude is usually given to death row inmates when it comes to appeals.  A government should give someone sentenced with a death penalty every legal option to ensure that they have had fair access to the entire judicial process.  The fact is, that innocent people have been executed in the U.S., and it's easy to write off those cases until you're the one fighting for your life.  Anyone who places any value on human life should be willing to allow someone sentenced to death every avenue possible to prove their innocence; because it's not a mistake that a government can atone for. Well, I'm not done with my essay yet, and I plan to address the issues of both Christianity and the death penalty AND the issue of innocence in detail.

By the way, my final thesis is actually going to be that the US must either put up or die as far as the death penalty is. I'm leaving that open. [[User:MountainDew|MountainDew]] 23:47, 10 April 2007 (EDT)
