I am not clear how the Chicago Marathon is in keeping with the spirit of this article. That Marathon is managed and promoted by professional experts. They solicit sponsorship that funds prize money and travel expenses paid to invited elite runners that come from around the world (mostly from East Africa). It has been a long time since American runners have won that race. Perhaps a better example might be the Marine Corps Marathon which refuses to pay prize money, but still attracts good winning times.
