Stealth (Military strategy)

Stealth in military strategy refers to the tactic of operating covertly.

Examples of stealth strategies/tactics used by the military

  • Soldiers wearing camouflage uniforms so enemy soldiers cannot detect their presence.
  • Snipers wearing "ghillie suits". A ghillie suit is a specialized camouflage clothing worn by snipers, designed to blend seamlessly with their surrounding environment by mimicking foliage through a net-like garment covered in loose strips of material like burlap, twine, or jute, often further augmented with natural vegetation from the area; essentially making them appear as part of the background, allowing them to remain hidden from view
  • Stealth technology: Minimizing an object's detectable signature, like through special design features or camouflage, to avoid detection by enemy sensors like radar, infrared, or sonar, allowing forces to approach targets undetected and gain a significant tactical advantage by surprise; essentially, it means hiding from the enemy until the moment of attack.

Sun Tzu and the Eastern tradition of military strategy

Sun Tzu (c. 400 B.C.) was the author of The Art of War, a classic Chinese treatise on military strategy. Sun Tzu's strategies and tactics utilize the "Eastern tradition of strategy that emphasizes outwitting an opponent through speed, stealth, flexibility, and a minimum of effort."[1][2]
