Stylianos Frantzeskakis

Fr. Stylianos Frantzeskakis was a Greek priest from the island of Crete. In May 1941, German troops invaded Crete via air and sea. In response, Fr Frantzeskakis rang the church bell in the port town of Paleochora and subsequently marched north to the town of Kandanos with a group of volunteers where they confronted the German invaders with old rifles. They pinned down the German soldiers for two whole days.

It is not known what Fr. Frantzeskakis' fate was, but given the brutal revenge killings the Germans committed after the battle to the local population, it seems likely that he was killed.
