Suction aspiration is a form of abortion in which the abortionist first numbs or paralyzes the cervix. Then, dilators are used to open the cervix. A hollow tube with a very sharp tip is then inserted into the uterus. The tube is connected to a powerful pump with a very strong suction force. The procedure tears the fetal body into pieces. The placenta is then cut from the inner wall of the uterus and the scraps are sucked out through the hose into a bottle. This procedure usually takes about 15 minutes. This type of abortion is used for most first trimester abortions in many countries.
