What does Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch mean in Welsh? GodlessLiberal 17:44, 28 April 2007 (EDT)
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch is in Welsh, therefore in Welsh it means Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch!
Let me rephrase that, what does it mean in English? GodlessLiberal 17:48, 28 April 2007 (EDT)
Let's get some money from the English. LateralQuercus
Arf!
Llan: church, or religious enclosure (a church building itself is eglwys, from the latin ecclesia.
Fair: modified form of Mair, (Saint) Mary.
Pwll: pool
Gwyn: white
Gyll: modified form of cyll: plural form of collen, hazel
Go-ger: close to
Y: the
Chwyrn: wild
Drobwll: modified form of trobwll, whirlpool
Llantysillio: church of St. Tysilio
Gogo: (meaning obscure)
Goch: modified form of coch, red.
Thus, the church of St Mary by the poool of the white hazels, close to the wild whirlpool of the red church of St Tysilio.
- My goodness. I'd say that's worth mentioning in the article, or we should at least give Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch its own page. GodlessLiberal 18:08, 28 April 2007 (EDT)
- Shifted the image to Llanfair P.G. article too. I'll try and find another Anglesey one. --Jeremiah4-22 19:09, 28 April 2007 (EDT)
