Antony Flew (1923 – 2010) was a British philosopher who belonged to the analytic and evidentialist schools of thought and, as such, was a strong advocate of atheism. He argued that one should presuppose atheism until empirical evidence of a God surfaces.
For decades, Flew was a legendary proponent and debater for atheism until, in 2004, he surprisingly renounced his atheism. Flew stated that in keeping his lifelong commitment to go where the evidence leads, he now believes in the existence of God:
- "It now seems to me that the findings of more than 50 years of DNA research have provided materials for a new and enormously powerful argument to design."
Flew also renounced naturalistic theories of evolution:
- "It has become inordinately difficult even to begin to think about constructing a naturalistic theory of the evolution of that first reproducing organism."
He later wrote the book There is a God: How the World's Most Notorious Atheist Changed His Mind. (See video link above).
