Talk:Conservatives and libertarians

Ed Poor,User:Patmac, anyone else who is interested in this topic, I figured we can start the discussion here instead of spread over several different user talk pages...

Patmac's statement is absolutely true from the "outside looking in" so to speak. I'm not great with words, so I want to talk to you guys before adjusting/editing it in any way. You have encapsulated the "voting" or "legislative" standpoint of Libertarians very nicely, but I feel we should probably specify that. Our personal opinions may vary widely, but what defines the Libertarian perspective as separate from the Conservative or Liberal stances is the view that people should be allowed to make decisions on moral/social topics rather than being told either way by the government. For example, I'm personally anti-abortion, but politically I'm pro-choice as I think the market will adjust itself as NGOs convince more people that it is morally wrong. I personally (I heard it or a variation on it somewhere else, can't remember where though) sum up the Libertarian philosophy as "You should be able to do whatever you want, as long as it doesn't infringe upon the rights of others to do what they want".
